County Pulse ~ Monitoring Cameron County Government

Transferring Out?

November 19th, 2009, 10:08 am by lmartinez

It seems like it’s  pretty much  a no brainer.

Cameron County Commissioners’ Court has no choice but to transfer nearly 100 inmates to Brooks County in order to hold up its agreement with the Feds.

Come Friday, some 96 inmates will make a nearly 166 mile trip to Falfurrias, which will be their home for the next few months. Okay, maybe 10 months.

Sure the county will have to dish out $130,000 plus per month to Brooks County for housing the inmates. However, if they manage to get the goverment to transfer 300 federals inmates to Cameron County, the county will end up with a good chunk of change.

So who’s going to tell the families of these inmates they are being shipped out?

The inmates themselves. Yikes.

Wow, should be some interesting dialogue there.

After that, the inmates will probably be glad that they are transferring out.

Just how many more are there?

It seems like it’s just about every other day - okay once every two weeks - that we hear of another lawmen being busted for committing some type of illegal activity.

On Tuesday, former DPS trooper Jesus Rafael Larrazolo was sentenced to more than 7 years in federal prison for dealing cocaine.

The big question is what in the heck are these lawmen doing?

They make well above minimum wage- actually they make  a heck of a lot more money that you average Joe.

As far as I know, the state hasn’t cut the working hours of state troopers nor has the federal government asked CBP officers to take furloughs.

So, are these badge carriers trying to keep up the Joneses or what?

You can pretty much bet that Larrazolo probably won’t be the last lawmen to get busted.

Maybe  they’d better think twice about keeping up with the Joneses, Garcias or whatever you want to call them.

And maybe when they are thinking about becoming dirty, the song “I Always Feel Like Somebody’s Watching Me” will pop in their minds.

Who would have thought

Who would have thought the Fort Hood massacre would have been caused by one of the U.S. Army’s own.

Yes, Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan is accused of committing the shootings, but an investigation pretty much points the finger at him as being  the lone gunman.

Was this a terrorist attack? If it is, Why?

More than 100 soldiers from the Rio Grande Valley were on the military base when the horrific incident occurred and thankfully none were hurt.

They didn’t receive phyiscal wounds, but the mental wounds  they received will linger long.

May we honor them and all other veterans on Veterans Day and may an incident such as this, never occur on a military base again.

Where are the voters?

November 2nd, 2009, 2:31 pm by lmartinez

Okay, there’s a big constitutional election happening tomorrow, but it seems like voters here have little interest in it.

Of the 168,000 registered voters in Cameron County, only 1,385 have taken advantage of early voting.

It’s pretty much a given that the remaining 166,000 plus won’t get out and vote on Election Day.

Will this be the same case in March, during the March primary….heck no.

Too bad, a vote is a bad thing to waste.

Imagine if that happened here

October 23rd, 2009, 2:20 pm by lmartinez

The big story in the Dallas area is about a police officer who ticketed a women for not speaking English.

She was stopped for making an illegal U-turn and when the officer began talking to her - well he then cited her for not speaking English.

Can you imagine if that happened here?

The ticket is going to be dismissed. Here’s the link to the story:

Border fence gone haywire?

October 20th, 2009, 1:08 pm by lmartinez
Border fence

Border fence

For as much as the federal government has dished out to construct the border fence, it should have thought about hiring more Border Patrol agents instead.

A quick drive along east Brownsville - near Southmost and Oklahoma road - resulted in several observations.

One - it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out how to scale the fence or find the gaping holes between the fence.

Two - who came up with the zig zag design - again more holes.

Three - What if you live on the opposite side of the fence - but still in the U.S. - go figure that one.

Sure, the fence’s construction has created more jobs, but more boots on the ground would have employed more people for a longer time.

How did he do that?

October 20th, 2009, 1:03 pm by lmartinez

Here’s a question that begs a response; how did a reporter with a national recognized newspaper manage to get a laptop computer into the federal courthouse.

Last we heard, reporters were not allowed to take  tape recorders, cellphones and laptops into the federal courthouse.

Do the feds know about this incident and are they doing anything about it?

Hmmm?

Mayor not out of the woods yet

October 15th, 2009, 3:48 pm by lmartinez

Although a mistrial has been declared in Mayor Pat M. Ahumada’s Jr. check scandal trial, he’s not out of the woods yet.

He still faces the three felony charges and will be retried in January.

Visiting judge Robert C. Pate had issued an Allen charge encouraging the jury to continue to deliberate to reach a decision, but the jurors said they couldn’t.

The case will b

Heading out again

October 1st, 2009, 8:20 am by lmartinez

For the second time in a period of three years,  the RGV will say goodbye to some 500 members of  the Texas National Guard heading out to Iraq.

For the past year, the guardsmen have been preparing for the deployment, which will be about a year.

They are not afraid to go, they say. Many have been in the Guard for more than 10 years and know what belonging to the Guard entails.

It doesn’t get any easier, no matter how many times they get deployed. What they hate to leave behind are their families - especially their children.

Their big send-off is Friday and what they are looking for is moral support from their community.

Whether you are for or against the war, shouldn’t matter when it comes to seeing these young men and women leave.

It’s making sure they know that their community - la familia - is behind them.

As everyone should know, a little support goes a long way.

More names popping up in 2010 races

September 25th, 2009, 2:23 pm by lmartinez

With the March primaries about six months away, more names are being added to the list of candidates seeking county seats that will be up for grabs.

Former Brownsville city commissioner Ernie Hernandez announced his candidacy for Pct. 2 County Commissioners, which brings the number up to at least six people interested in the seat.

More interesting, is to see what post Pct. 2 Commissioner John Wood will seek next year. He has John Wood 2010 bumper stickers out there, but they don’t specify - at least not for now - what position he’s seeking.

We know there are already two individuals that want the county judge seat. It will be interesting to see if it makes it to three.
