Are you a U.S. citizen? You’d better hope so during hurricane season

The recent annoucement by the U.S. Border Patrol that agents will check the legal status of RGV residents prior to letting them evacuate from the area because of a hurricane has got people talking. Since last year, Cameron County officials have maintained their main protocol is to keep residents safe regardless of their legal status and this is why pushed the state’s 2-1-1 registry last year. But, when the BP’s recent annoucement, some people who need help getting out should a hurricane threaten the South Texas coast, may opt not to register for fear of being detained and may choose to stay in the flood prone area. It will be interesting to see what the BP will actually do when we are threatened with a hurricane. As the saying goes, “if you’re going to talk the talk, you’ve got to walk the walk”- sometimes.
