Newly elected Cameron County Pct. 1 Constable Jose Maldonado Jr.’s term hasn’t even started and he’s already out.

The Republican Constable has agreed to resign from office come Jan. 2 in exchange for the District Attorney’s office not to prosecute criminal charges against him.

Maldonado is accused of letting a friend freely fire his county issued weapon in the air. You know, just like people do during New Year’s Eve.

He is also accused of being under the influence at the time of the alleged incident that happened sometime around Halloween.

Once Maldonado’s resignation is official, it will be up to the county again to appoint someone  to the position.

The county did this with Maldonado so he could  fill the remaining term of convicted Constable Saul Ochoa.

They say things happen in “threes” and one has to wonder if something similar will happen to the next person appointed to fill the  Pct. 1 seat.

Could an Independent be appointed to the seat?

The county has already tried a Democrat and Republican and well, you know the rest of the story.
